How old are you?  45

Are you from Calgary? If not, where are you from? Yes, but I am originally from South Africa.  I've been living in Calgary for 16 years.

Are you married?  Yes, I am.

Do you have children?  Yes, I do.

What do you do for a living?  Product specialist for Nespresson and Financial Educator.

Have you ever had a portrait session (by yourself) before? No I have not.

Why do you want to participate in The Beauty Project?  I am not comfortable in front of the camera lens.  I am homing that I can inspire other women to fall in love with their own beauty (inner and outer).  If I can do it, anybody can do it.

What does beauty mean to you?  Beauty means I am content with myself. True beauty comes from within. An inner beauty is radiant, infectious, has a warm glow and a sparkle in the eyes. It is something you experience and feel when you meet that person.

When do you feel most beautiful?  When I am at peace with myself.

What does being a woman mean to you? Being a woman means being feminine, soft spoken/heart, being a Mom, wife, lover, friend, and great role-model. A woman should be strong in her beliefs, but also vulnerable to share her flaws, challenges and mistakes that she made along the way in order to teach/share with other women. A real woman is a good listener, is not judgmental or spreading gossip.

What do you love about yourself?  Why is this the toughest question in the world? I am passionate, and I am able to laugh and smile even when life gets difficult.

Marita, it was such a pleasure to get to know you better and to photograph you.  We have so much in common that I really felt like I was meeting and photographing and old friend. You are everything that you believe a woman should be and you are very beautiful both on the inside and the outside. I know your story and images will inspire others to see the beauty within themselves too.  Thank you for participating in The Beauty Project!

The Beauty Project - Rosemarie

Rosemarie is another lovely lady that I have known for many years who applied to take part in The Beauty Project.  We attended the same church and even worked together on the kitchen team for awhile!  I was really pleased when she nominated her daughter-in-law for The Beauty Project and then signed herself up as well!   We had a great time at her session and created some gorgeous portraits for her.  Please enjoy her beautiful images and her story.

How old are you?  63

Are you from Calgary?  If not, where are you from?  I'm originally from Saskatchewan, but moved to Calgary in 1969.

Are you married?  Divorced

Do you have children?  I have two children; a son and a daughter.

What do you do for a living?  I'm a bookkeeper for two Benjamin Moore stores.

Have you ever had a portrait session (by yourself) before?  No,

Why do you want to participate in The Beauty Project?  I'm getting older and it would be nice to have some quality photos of ME.  I would also like to update my Linkedin profile photo.

What does beauty mean to you?  When someone is happy with themselves, more of inner beauty shining through. When eyes are bright-smile with your eyes.

When do you feel the most beautiful?  When I'm happy.

What does being a woman mean to you? When I can be confident of my journey as a mother, friend, and co-worker. To be caring and loving to others.

What do you love about yourself? That I live out the love for others, and that I have a relationship with my Creator.

Rosemarie, it was an absolute pleasure to photograph you, and it was so nice to be able to catch up and visit with you again too.  You truly are a beautiful woman and your beauty shines through in your eyes and your smile and in the love you share with others! You are a special lady and I'm so glad that you decided to participate in The Beauty Project.

The Beauty Project - Amber

Although I have loved photographing all my beautiful Beauty Project ladies, I think that Amber's session has been one of my favorites.  Amber is going through a very difficult and painful time in her life right now which has given her self-esteem a major blow.  Her images reflect the incredible array of emotions that she is going through right now, and she wanted to participate in The Beauty Project to capture those emotions. She also wanted to use this portrait session as an opportunity to reframe how she sees herself. Her actual photo session was emotional, but when Amber and her mother came to her portrait reveal, and Amber saw how truly beautiful she is, she broke down in tears!!  Again, I was reminded of how truly powerful this entire experience has been for so many of these lovely women, and I was humbled.   Please enjoy Amber's images and her story.

How old are you?  I'll be 33 in April.

Are you from Calgary?  Born and raised in Calgary. I have never lived elsewhere.

Are you married?  My husband left me in January. My heart is still married.

Do you have children? No

What do you do for a living? I work in Human Resources. I strive to give people dignity and empathy in situations where I am forced to deliver horrible news. I do research and try my best to effect positive changes in my workplace. Repect for people "as people" is important.

Have you ever had a portrait session (by yourself) before?  I never have.

Why do you want to participate in The Beauty Project? Because I know there is beauty in me. Right now I am wounded. There is a certain beauty to be found in the melancholy. I can see it on the periphery, but I confess I feel lost. Maybe your lens can help me reframe myself.

What does beauty mean to you? There is beauty in all things. Beauty is a simple framing of life for me. It means acceptance. There is beauty in joy and also in sorrow. Life simply is beautiful, but only if you look at it with love and acceptance.

When do you feel the most beautiful? In the mountains, or out in the prairie grass looking at my mountains. The air outside makes me feel whole.

What does being a woman mean to you? Right now I am questioning that daily. My identity is shredded. Once, being a woman meant being half of a whole. Now it has to be the whole. I know I can be that. Intellectually, I know that my personhood isn't defined by him. Emotionally, it's less clear. Being a woman means strength, and endurance, and integrity. It means not settling or backing down. Women fight. Women are strong. We are caregivers and healers. I am those things. I am a woman.

What do you love about yourself? I love my sense of humor. I love my child-like spirit and my wonder. I love my imagination and I love my fragile heart. I think I am an authentic person. I love my honesty and self awareness. I love me.

Tell me your story: Once upon a time a little girl fell off a swing. She didn't know how to get back on. With bruised and bloody knees she stood up and watched the seing limply float toward her and then away again. She no longer trusted the swing. Maybe it was time to investigate the see-saw.

Oh my goodness...Amber!  I am crying as I am typing this out because now that I know you a bit better I know that you are all those things and more!!  You deserve to love yourself, and you deserve happiness. I really pray that your participation in The Beauty Project helps you to heal, and helps you to see yourself as the truly beautiful woman that you are.

The Beauty Project - Sharon W

This week I'm featuring images from my friend Sharon's Beauty Project session.  I've known Sharon for many years but hadn't seen her for awhile, so it was really great to reconnect with her and do this session for her.  Sharon is a very busy mom to 4 boys, so it was definitely great for her to have a girls day out that was all about her!  We had a great time during her session, and at one point we got the giggles so bad that tears were streaming and  makeup almost got ruined. The funniest part was that while this was happening I was balancing on two chairs above her so it was definitely NOT the time to get the giggles....which of course was exactly why it made us laugh.  So not only did we have a great time we also created some gorgeous images.  Enjoy Sharon's story and her beautiful portraits!

How old are you?  I am 52

Are you from Calgary? Yes

Do you have children?  Yes, 4 boys.

What do you do for a living?  I work from home in two businesses, and homeschool in between time.

Have you ever had a portrat session (by yourself) before?  Yes a long time ago...I needed a head shot for acting.

Why do you want to participate in The Beauty Project?  Because I love the work that you do and would love to have the chance for a glamour look.

What does beauty mean to you?  You are making me cry really because I know it means who I am, not how I look, and intellectually I understand that, but my heart has a hard time living that out.

When do you feel the most beautiful?  When I take care of myself and get ready and fix myself up.  Dressed up.

What does being a woman mean to you?  Work...lol!

What do you love about yourself?  I don't know?  I really don't know!  I like that I can adapt.

Tell me your story.  I have been working hard at coming out of the self-esteem hole I have been in.  I am working at loving myself....and the essential oils have helped...balance hormones, etc. I want to get back to loving myself and taking care of myself.  It is time.

Sharon teaches about and sells essential oils.  If you are intereted in talking to her to find out more about her business and these amazing oils please contact me.

Sharon, your story is bringing tears to my eyes as I'm typing this out because I totally understand how you feel.  As busy wives, mothers, and business owners it is so easy to put ourselves on the back burner...for years!!  And then one day you realize that you are tired, you've forgotten who you are, and that something has to change.  I get that!!  Sharon, I want you to know that you are an amazing woman and that you are beautiful both on the inside and the outside.  I'm so glad that you are taking the time to rediscover yourself, and your beauty, and that you started this journey by participating in the Beauty Project.  I hope that through this you can see how truly beautiful you are.

The Beauty Project - Jill

Have you ever had a portrait session (by yourself) before?  No

Why do you want to participate in The Beauty Project? I've seen your portraits...you do beautiful work!  I would love to have a portrait of myself that I am in love with, something that makes me feel beautiful.

What does beauty mean to you?  When I'm assessing my own beauty, it usually is related to outward apprearance, and primarily is related to weight.  For myself, I also fall into the trap of relating my beauty to hair style, make-up, and clothing.  I am not nearly so cricital and superficial when looking at the beauty of others...inner beauty shines brightest!

When do you feel the most beautiful?  When I have lost some weight, have just gotten my hair done (or have styled it nicely myself), or when I am wearing something I feel is flattering.

What does being a woman mean to you?  Being a woman means taking on everything the world has to throw at you, and doing it all with grace and style!  Women have so many pressures from so many angles...learning how to juggle them all without losing yourself is a challenge, but one we must rise to!
